As superficial as the world of fashion may at times seem, during the fashion weeks it is the detail that counts. For nails, with each season come new shapes, colours and textures. From dark red to greige and pistachio, from matt or glossy to shimmering metallics. Patience and a steady hand are an advantage for the nail trends over the coming months: this autumn/winter, international nail artists are focusing on flamboyant graphic designs. Striping tape to mask off individual sections of the nail as well as extra-fine brushes will make this artistic endeavour easier. If you don’t have a special brush to hand, American nail designer Julie Kandalec recommends using a hair clip instead. Nails with wow factor were seen at Rebecca Minkoff’s and Sophie Theallet’s shows in New York, among others. As the new Global Color Designer of the beauty brand essie, fashion designer Minkoff is now also involved in the creation of future must-have varnishes. If you admire that level of nail art, but are personally more a fan of understated looks, then stick to classic feminine colours for the time being, ranging from nude and red (seen e.g. at Diane von Fürstenberg and Carolina Herrera) to sand shades (Alexander Wang) and dark metallic varnishes (Costello Tagliapietra and Wes Gordon). For an individual touch, why not create your very own, personal favourite by applying different layers of varnishes from the same colour palette (Yigal Azrouël).
