A fashion classic is back on the catwalk and soon to be back in our wardrobes: check! From all-over check to mere hints of houndstooth on accessories, from chequerboard-and-floral combos to a revival of traditional Scottish tartan. Never before has the pattern been as ubiquitous as it is this year.
Old classic, reinterpreted
The international designers have been toying with the classic to give it a brand-new look. Etro – otherwise famous for its boho styles and paisley patterns – has woven chequerboard patterns into their designs, while Emporio Armani has gone for velvety check in all black, with only the contrast between matte and shine revealing the print. At Bottega Veneta, the houndstooth pattern could be spotted on men’s bags.
All-over or accent
Whether from top to toe or just the occasional accent, check is the look of the season. At Louis Vuitton it transforms a corset into a waistcoat, whereas Prada and Miu Miu are focusing on coats and jackets, using various sizes of checks and colour combos – from grey and purple to brown and orange. And Etro has opted for an all-over look for men with a tartan trouser suit. Also a very attractive look for women.
