In 2016 Louis Vuitton launched the “Horizon” trolley cases. Now star industrial designer Marc Newson has worked for the French luxury brand once more to develop “Horizon Soft”: luggage with an innovative soft shell. “I need to have a reason, something really compelling, to start a project,” explains the designer in a press release. “With this rolling luggage, I’m interested in weaving.”
Innovative design and technology
In weaving? The outer material of “Horizon Soft” is a thermally formed, double-sided 3D jacquard weave, which bears Newson’s reinterpretation of the LV logo. The suitcases are made out of a technical yarn composed of fusible elastic threads. It is woven using a seamless weaving technology.
Minimal weight, maximum volume
Compartments and zips are incised with ultrasound to reduce welt seams. But it’s not just about innovation – tradition can also be found in the luggage line. The telescopic handles are covered in cowhide leather, a nod to Louis Vuitton’s historical suitcases.
Minimal weight and maximum volume were important to the designer too. The cabin case only weighs 2.9 kilograms at a volume of 36 litres. Another new feature is a zip-pull lock that you only need one hand to use. And it goes without saying that the wheels are almost completely silent.
Marc Newson is a travel expert
Designer Marc Newson does a lot of travelling. “I know exactly what my luggage needs to be able to do – and I don’t think I’m alone there. Travelling is very closely connected to luxury, both in historical and in functional contexts. The two go hand in hand. Experience is an essential part of the process. The pieces either survive or they kick the bucket on the way.”
