Rankin, actually John Rankin Waddell, is a photographer and publisher. Together with Jefferson Hack he launched the monthly magazine Dazed & Confused in 1992, which soon set new standards and reached cult status. As a photographer, Rankin creates iconographic portraits. Another cult magazine thought up by Rankin – Hunger – is now available as a book edition to celebrate its fifth birthday.
The Hunger Book, curated by Rankin himself, pays tribute to the ten issues from the first five years of the magazine, which is released biannually and conceives itself as a platform for innovative and provocative movements in fashion, culture and style. Film stills, original drawings and unpublished material round off the glimpse behind the scenes and the insight into the production of the magazine.
Incidentally, Rankin produced seventy portraits of Berlin faces – i.e. genuine Berliners – in April this year for the construction site covering for KaDeWe, and these larger-than-life images have since adorned the façade of the most famous German department store.
