While international celebrities have to wait for invitations to galas to appear at their fashionable best, the Viennese are much luckier. Here there are several opportunities every weekend to throw on and wrap around the best that your wardrobe and jewellery box has to offer. We have compiled an inspirational selection that will leave no one wanting – even the most eccentric of ball-goers. And we also had a look at Instagram to see what fashion labels and celebs are recommending from this year’s spring/summer collections.

Whatever works on the red carpet is bound to look just as beautiful in the glamourous setting of the Hofburg Palace, State Opera House and Musikverein. At balls, more is indeed more – the trick is simply to make sure it is in the right places and in the right doses. Extravagant highlights, metallic effects and sparkling stones can be found at Alexander McQueen and Miu Miu, elaborate embroideries with sequins and classy headdresses at Valentino. Reminiscent of Cleopatra – and it’s worth taking a leaf out of her book, as she truly was a woman who knew how to present herself. For men, there are daring takes on the traditional tailcoat by Alexander McQueen and classic capes by Saint Laurent.
