Born in Styria, Austria, Stefan Resch describes his cooking style as traditional, regional and authentic. After spending several years abroad, he and his team of 30 chefs are now responsible for the restaurant The Bank, the bar The Pearl, the Lounge and the Living Room at the Park Hyatt Vienna.

What and where do you eat in Vienna?

I like (European) Chinese food, especially at the Restaurant Suli (1230, Valentingasse 2). Whenever I think it can’t get any better, the next time I go they raise the standard even higher.

Austria’s famous Stehachterl (glass of wine drunk at the bar): which wine merchant’s assortment are you tasting your way through?

The Alpe Adria Weinhandlung’s (1010, Am Hof 11), because there I can be certain that I’ll always be given the best quality, and because I’ve now developed a friendship with Silvie, the owner.

Where do you find Viennese design that fits into your suitcase?

Around the Naschmarkt and in the many small Viennese design shops around Neubaugasse in the 7th district. I find something new every time I go there.

When Stefan Resch fits out his kitchen at home, which shop does he go to?

SieMatic at Stilwerk – top quality in a casual environment.

A chef spends the whole day on his/her feet. What are the best shoes for your feet?

Ecco (1010, Kärntnerstrasse 47), quite simply because they make your feet happy, and that makes for a happy wearer. They are everything that you need in a kitchen: comfy, nonslip and not heavy.

Where do you party into the wee hours?

In the summer, at CapaTosta in the Stadtpark or at Café Vinylo (both: 1010, Johannesgasse 33). There’s Soul & Pizza there, it’s only open in the summer and it’s a real insiders’ tip!
