Dreaming of One-Offs

Haute couture trends for summer 2017

Only a select few will actually be able to hang these perfect pieces in their wardrobes, but that sobering thought won’t stop the rest of us from swooning over the crème de la crème of fashion design. Because the haute couture shows in Paris are the stuff dreams are made of.

Valentino
The term “dream dresses” is, if American Vogue is right, an overused description, but on this occasion the fashion bible had to admit that Pierpaolo Piccioli was right: fashion is all about dreams, they are what make us human. Dreams and their interpretation are something that even the oldest surviving work of literature, the Epic of Gilgamesh, revolved around. And fittingly enough, Piccioli’s inspiration for his latest collection came from ancient mythology. Where just last year Renaissance princesses seemed to step out of Shakespeare plays, this year it is Greek goddesses who are promenading down the catwalks. In pure, classically flowing, but equally dramatic and voluminous gowns. Utterly other-worldly.

Armani Privé
Giorgio Armani’s Privé collection was no less dramatic than in Valentino’s Olympus – even before the show had started. When two goddesses of the performing arts, Nicole Kidman and Isabelle Huppert, made an appearance, showing reverence not just for the couturier but also for each other. Presumably they are both on the lookout for a something suitable for the Academy Awards ceremony: which is how it came to pass that one Oscar nominee kissed another’s hand – to the delight of onlookers – before Armani presented his creations, iridescent in every imaginable shade of orange.

Louis Vuitton Haute Joaillerie
As part of the haute couture week in Paris, selected brands such as Boucheron, Dior, De Beers and Louis Vuitton Joaillerie presented – no, staged! – their highest of high-end pieces. Louis Vuitton slightly softened the in-house art deco design code for the new Blossom line, showing monogram blooms encrusted all over with diamonds, resulting in magnificent artworks of lavender-coloured sapphires and light pink crystals. A celebration of the high art of jewellery design.
