Happy Birthday, Frankie Boy

20151211
On 12th December Frank Sinatra would have turned 100. A new photographic biography reveals Frank Sinatra as a man rather than just as a star and takes a look behind the scenes of an artist’s life. His hits like My Way or Moon River are as unforgettable as his performances with the Rat Pack and its members Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford and – perhaps surprising for some – a woman, too, namely Shirley MacLaine. Sinatra’s shows in the 1940s were the first to trigger the phenomenon of mass hysteria that we most often associate with later musicians like the Beatles and Elvis Presley. This publication from Abrams Books pays homage to the charismatic singer and entertainer and takes us on an illustrated journey through his career. It unites numerous rarely published photographs in a single volume, showing Sinatra in the recording studio, at concerts and on film sets. There are also iconographic images by great photographers like Sid Avery, Bob Willoughby and Ted Allen, which have not only shaped the public image of “The Voice”, but which also paint a natural picture of Frank Sinatra as a real man. Quotes from companions and friends and a foreword by his last wife, Barbara Sinatra, provide an insight into the private world of “Ol’ Blue Eyes”.

Frank Sinatra’s Style

Sinatra’s fashion style is just as timeless as his music. He wore suits as casually as others wear jeans and jumpers. Frankie Boy always looked chic in a suit, never awkward. He looked so natural in a three-piece suit or tuxedo, he could have been born in one. He could make tweed jackets and fedoras look relaxed yet elegant. He illustrates perfectly that it is our attitude and not our figure that defines our appearance. At Etro, Bottega Veneta, Kiton, Brioni and Emporio Armani men can find every variation of the classic Sinatra look.
