With Fashion Designers A-Z, the Taschen publishing house has brought out a limited edition that will inevitably become a collectors’ item. Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of the fashion museum at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), curated the volume, which gathers together everyone and every label – from Akris to Prada, Yves Saint Laurent to Zoran – that has made fashion an art and, in turn, a key factor for the economy. The designers’ significance and influence are illustrated by 500 exhibits from the permanent textile collection of the FIT, themselves furnished with pointed texts. Suzy Menkes, influential fashion critic at the International Herald Tribune, is co-author of the 654-page book. The fabric used to bind the limited edition (a total of just 11,000 copies) comes in a variety of designs: by Akris, Etro, Stella McCartney, Missoni, Prada or Diane von Fürstenberg. Miucca Prada had patterns from previous collections reprinted on cotton. Here: a jungle of bananas à la minimal-baroque.
